How It Started
Lead Sailmaker - Doug Horner
After 18 years of sailmaking and designing experience, I decided it was finally the right time to create Casca Sails. I starting out sailmaking in the mid 2000's with speed sails, learning under Andy Davis and Richard Estaugh, gaining experience in not only how to make sails to championship winning standards but also how to run development programmes.
Following that I spent several years in a yacht cruising loft gaining a huge amount of experience in making and servicing yacht sails all the way from daysailors to 80ft yachts.
Then I was back into the very sharp end of racing sail making with HD sails, further developing and gaining experience under Jim Hunt and Andy Davis. This was a huge step forward in relation to mast, hull and foil development as HD Sails are heavily involved with spar makers and hull designers in developing complete packages to repeatedly win championship after championship.
I've also gained a great deal of knowledge and experience from Chris Gould of Creation Covers, who is possibly the best all-round cover maker in the country.
After leaving HD sails I took one final stint in a yacht cruising loft on the south coast and decided it was time to put all of my ideas and experience into a sail loft aimed at creating better sails for the yacht world
The Goal
The goal of Casca Sails is to make the best sails possible whilst finding ways of bringing the cost down for the sailor. It means we're slightly more fixed in what we offer compared to other sail lofts, however, that streamlining of sail spec is where we're able to create all the savings.
Naturally everything made at Casca Sails is made on site in Swanage in the UK.
Constant Development
We're always testing and developing and we're more than happy for other sail lofts to copy anything we do, as that way the sailors get better sails. When we make improvements, we'll post all the details on our Sail Lab page for all to see.
